Award-winning photographer Pauline St. Denis was educated in the arts from a young age, while growing up in Cleveland, OH. Her family was a fixture in society there, and also were collectors. Her father was a painter and sought educational emphasis on music, architectural study and art history for his children. Later, Pauline herself chose Interlochen Academy for a degree in photography.
After she graduated, Pauline went to Chicago to work for Kranzen Studios and got a master's training in 8x10. Working in large format pre retouching enabled her to train her eye and technique. She then moved to Paris for two years to work with the photographers at Barbara Schlager. After a full experience of assisting lead photographers, Pauline returned to New York, where her work with Holga cameras gained momentum.
Pauline has been shooting the Holga since high school and was fascinated by it. She was also very inspired by the varied techniques of the fashion photographers of the late seventies and early eighties, namely Guy Bourdin.
"Photography is a reflective medium that measures emotional and visual elements. Image capture does not have to be static. The ethereal quality of light, movement and time are in constant flux. I capture these elements by focusing the action and subtle movements of my subjects. Many photographers use light as a sculptural tool, weighing images to a page...."
Pauline captures the motion in her fashion and portrait work on subjects such as musicians and athletes. As a director of motion capture she brings a life and energy to every shot, and this has benefited her greatly in the past 5 years with her advertising work in lifestyle. The signature of Pauline's work is her ability to capture emotional energy and literal motion successfully in many different formats, whether she is shooting Canon systems or a plastic Holga. Pauline has championed several markets, including portrait-oriented fashion, celebrity portrait, lifestyle and sports fitness.
Pauline's clients include Bergdorf Goodman, NIKE, Showtime, L'oreal, JP Morgan Chase, NBA Stores, Alain Mikli Paris, Sony BMG, Kleinfeld, Sirius Network, Discovery/ TLC, National Geographic Channel, US Virgin Islands, Guiness Ale and Starz -Encore.
